Lynx Goru in Slovenia

Lynx Goru in Slovenia

The Dinaric – south-eastern Alpine population of Lynx, part of which is also present in Slovenia and Croatia, has been increased by two male lynx Goru and Doru. As part of LIFE Lynx Slovenia project, they are the first two of at least 14 lynx, with which they will try to save the population and decrease the level of inbreeding.

The lynx, the Romanian project team named Goru, was transported to Slovenia with no problems. His first days in Slovenia were spent in an environment adjustment enclosure in Loški potok, where he was taken care of by local hunters from the Loški potok hunting club, a veterinarian and members of the project group. In the beginning of May Goru has been released in Slovenia at the same time as Doru was released in Croatia. With the help of telemetric collar experts track their movement and their inclusion in the population.

According to data obtained from the LIFE Lynx Slovenia project, both lynx are in Slovenia at the moment. Doc. Dr. Miha Krofel from the Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana, presented to the public how the Lynx Goru moved around after release: “Goru soon after release in Loški Potok travelled over border into Croatia. Then he returned to Slovenia and travelled north to Ljubljana barje. There he turned toward east and continued toward Ribnica. At the moment he is on Mala Gora, inside local territory of Slovenian Lynx Teja, which was as part of the project equipped with a telemetric collar in the beginning of this year. Last months data suggests Goru is already establishing his new territory around Mala gora.”

More about the project in up-to-date information about the lynx Goru and the project can be found on the LIFE Lynx project website.
